SW Oregon takes two from ClarkThe Clark College Women’s Softball Team had a double-header on Friday, May 9, against the Southwestern Oregon Community College Lakers. The Lakers won game one 8-0 and game two 14-2. Bailee Mayer was the starting pitcher for game one. In the second inning the Lakers had back-to-back doubles and took an early one run lead. With no outs, Mayer forced the Lakers into three pop-ups to get out of the inning.
Alex Peery The Independent The Penguins earned their first hit of the game in the third inning. Sophomore Krista Kountz singled, but they were unable to bring her home. “I got lucky and just hit the ball away from everyone,” Kountz said. In the fourth inning, the Penguin defense handed the Lakers two runs thanks to an errant throw over the first basemen’s head and another past the third basemen. First basemen Kori Miller picked up the second hit of the game for the Penguins in the fourth inning, yet they couldn’t manage any more hits. “We just weren’t hitting the ball in game one,” Coach Kasey Powers said. In the fifth inning, the game began to unravel. The Lakers scored five runs in the inning. The biggest blow was a three-run homer by pitcher Karma Rice. The Lakers took game one 8-0. Catherine Martinez was the starting pitcher for game two. The game began with a scary play in the first inning. A Lakers player hit the ball to right field and as the ball came in to first base the runner was hit by the ball. Kori Miller was playing first base and got tangled up with the runner. “It was a crazy play—she was hit in the knee by the ball, and then I was kneed in the head,” Miller said. “I’m okay, but I was a little dizzy.” The Lakers player was able to hobble off the field with help from her coach. In the second inning sophomore Kellie Preheim hit a line drive up the third base line. Brooklyne Freeman followed with a fly ball to center-field that dropped in for a base hit. With runners at second and third base Kristina Carbis hit a two-run double. Clark took a 2-0 lead. In the third inning Martinez gave up a walk that came around to score with a base hit from game one star, Karma Rice. Rice had six RBI’s in the double-header. With Clark leading 2-1, they were looking forward to their first win since April 19. Unfortunately, in the fourth inning Clark’s pitching and defense fell apart again. The Lakers had ten hits and scored thirteen runs in the inning. “It was a great game until that fourth inning—the girls just got deflated,” Powers said. “Due to some injuries, people were playing out of position and trying to figure it out.” The Lakers won game two 14-2. “We are really beat up right now, but I expect a really tough battle for the last games of the season,” Powers said. |
