Chemistry department gets grant from National Science Foundation

    Clark’s chemistry program received a $134,750 grant from the National Science Foundation.

    Nadine Fattelah, principle investigator and co-division chair of physical sciences and physics said that the chemistry department will receive the grant in July 2008, and will purchase a new Fourier-Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (FT-NMR) spectrometer that will be available for student use as early as fall quarter 2008.

Baby Boomers at Clark College

    Clark is the recipient of a $70,000 grant to fund the national Plus 50 Initiative. According to a news release from Barbara Kerr, executive director of communications and marketing, Clark was chosen to be one of five "mentor" colleges assisting 10 "demonstration" colleges. According to the press release, Clark was picked, “because of its expertise in reaching out to students over age 50.”

Clark celebrates 75th anniversary with Diamond Jubilee

    Clark will celebrate its 75th anniversary with the Diamond Jubilee. The celebration will be 75 events throughout the 2008-2009 school year.

Release time leads to miscommunication

    Clark President Bob Knight held an Open Dialogue on May 5. The event calendar on the Clark Web site describes the event as a monthly forum open to faculty, staff and students, and does not suggest any predetermined topic for discussion. At this event, however, attendees made clear the issue they wished to address during the public meeting: release time.

Finance Committee votes on fund balance

    The Associated Students of Clark College (ASCC) Finance Committee discussed  potential fund balances and contingency funds for student activities on April 29.

Free Coffee at ASCC: Student money provides free beverages

    The Associated Students of Clark College (ASCC) offers free beverages in the ASCC offices. The beverages are available during ASCC office hours, which are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The ASCC offices are in the Penguin Union Building.

C-TRAN Goes Annual with Increases

    C-TRAN fares will be increasing May 1. One time C-Zone cash fares will jump a nickel to $1.30. Single use All-Zone cash fares will increase by a dime, landing at $2.35. Depending on zone and discount rates, monthly passes will rise in cost $1 to $4. Express fares to Portland will not be affected by the fare change.

   

    According to the automated C-TRAN helpline, "The additional revenue will help pay for rising fuel costs and other expenses."

   

Counseling series for faculty/staff

    A three-part series called “Consultations with a Counselor” seeks to educate Clark faculty about the warning signs of distressed students and outline ways of approaching students with concerns and referrals for counseling.
 
    The series begins on April 30, and will continue May 7 and May 14 in the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This series is open to faculty and students alike.
 

Student ambassador positions open

    Student ambassador positions are now open to Clark students for the fall 2008 school year. The 10 paid positions require students to represent Clark to prospective students, student ambassador coordinator Vanessa Watkins said.
